4. Better yet, cover the pond with styrofoam insulation
Insulating the pond helps even out the temperature fluctuations in late fall and early spring. During the winter covering the pond with styrofoam insulation helps with heat retention. It may seem counter intuitive, but you’ll need to put a couple holes in the insulation. Even though there will be some heat loss, the holes will allow for gas exchange.
