In 2014, a Maine woman had her Koi forcibly removed from her residence after a failed attempt to legalize Koi keeping in her home state. Having a Koi pond and keeping Koi fish is currently legal in 49 out of 50 states. She fought all the way to the state's supreme court, but was ultimately rejected when they upheld the lower court’s ruling.

1. Keep your pond clean

This one is a no brainer. Leaves, sticks and even garbage can end up in your pond during the Fall. Leaving them in the pond through the winter will cause the DOC (dissolves organic compound) levels in the water to rise. Clumps of leaves and debris also provide the perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria release hydrogen sulfide into the water, which is poisonous to your fish.
