Tsubasa and the Great Pond Race: A Koi Fable

Tsubasa the koi in the great pond race

A fictional racing fable about mentorship, practice and recovering from a setback.

Tsubasa knew the Great Pond Race by heart: the turns, the cheering, the moment the winner crossed the finish line. Watching was no longer enough. They wanted to enter, even though every practice race seemed to leave them at the back.

Knowing the course as a spectator was different from swimming it. The other competitors handled turns and currents that left Tsubasa struggling behind. Entering the race would mean learning more than the names of its winners.

Undeterred by their initial setbacks, Tsubasa sought guidance from an elderly koi named Sensei Hiroshi. Sensei Hiroshi had witnessed countless races and possessed wisdom garnered from a lifetime of experience. Recognizing Tsubasa's unwavering spirit, Sensei Hiroshi agreed to mentor them, guiding them on a path of growth and self-discovery.

Sensei Hiroshi began with something less dramatic than a race: one turn, practiced well. Then came another, followed by steady swimming and room to rest. Tsubasa learned to notice the course instead of staring only at the fish ahead. Speed came gradually; control came first.

With each setback, Tsubasa discovered new depths of resilience. They encountered challenges that tested their spirit, such as relentless storms that stirred the waters and obscured their vision. But Tsubasa persevered, using these obstacles as stepping stones to build their determination and sharpen their focus.

On race morning, Tsubasa waited in the water beside the other competitors. Colors flashed beneath the sunlight. The crowd looked toward the starting line, and Tsubasa remembered the first turn rather than the last-place finishes.

At the signal, the fish surged forward. Tsubasa kept a steady course, passed the first turn cleanly and found an opening between two competitors. For once, they were moving through the pack instead of chasing it.

But just as victory seemed within reach, a powerful wave disrupted the race, throwing Tsubasa off course. Undeterred, they channeled Sensei Hiroshi's teachings, swiftly recovering and continuing their pursuit.

With every stroke, Tsubasa's resilience and tenacity shone through. They surged forward, overtaking one competitor after another. The cheers of the crowd grew louder, their support fueling Tsubasa's determination.

As the finish line neared, Tsubasa summoned their final burst of strength. They propelled themselves through the water with unwavering conviction, their heart pounding with the realization that victory was within their grasp.

With an incredible surge of speed, Tsubasa soared past the competition, crossing the finish line in first place. The garden erupted in a symphony of applause and cheers, celebrating Tsubasa's triumphant journey.

After the cheers, Tsubasa swam to Sensei Hiroshi. “I nearly lost it at the wave,” they said. “You did lose your line,” the old koi replied. “Then you found it again.” That mattered almost as much as the finish.

At the next practice, a young koi arrived at the back of the group. Tsubasa waited beside the first turn and offered to show them the way around.
