An imaginative animal fable about learning with a patient mentor.
Kiko’s friends made swimming look easy. He made it look like a series of unexpected turns. When they crossed the pond together, he often arrived late, facing the wrong direction and trying very hard not to be discouraged.
As Kiko watched his companions swim gracefully, he couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness and frustration. He longed to join them, to explore the depths of the pond and experience the freedom of the water. Determined to overcome his limitations, Kiko decided to embark on a journey of self-discovery and learn the art of swimming.
With a hopeful heart, Kiko sought guidance from the wise old turtle, Grandpa Tully. Grandpa Tully had witnessed the challenges faced by young koi in the past and had a wealth of wisdom to share. He listened patiently as Kiko shared his dream of swimming and offered his support.
Grandpa Tully began teaching Kiko about the subtle movements and techniques required for swimming. He explained how to adjust his fins and tail to maintain balance and control in the water. Kiko diligently practiced these movements, flapping his fins with determination and mimicking the motions of the other fish.
Days turned into weeks, and Kiko's persistence slowly paid off. His swimming skills improved little by little. While he still had occasional wobbles and tumbles, he no longer felt hopeless. Grandpa Tully encouraged him, reminding him that learning something new takes time and patience.
Confidence helped, but Grandpa Tully never treated it as a substitute for practice. Kiko learned to notice what worked, ask for help and try a smaller step when a larger one went badly. He did not need to master the whole pond in one afternoon.
One day, Grandpa Tully took him to a gentle current they had watched together before. Kiko hesitated at its edge, then entered beside his mentor. He remembered the small adjustments they had practiced.
At first he overcorrected and wobbled. He slowed his movements, found a steadier rhythm and let the current carry him along the route. By the far end, he was smiling. Grandpa Tully had very little advice to add.
Word of Kiko's remarkable journey spread throughout the pond, and the other koi admired his determination and bravery. They praised him for his resilience and celebrated his newfound swimming skills.
When the younger fish asked Kiko how he had learned, he showed them a quiet place to begin. He still had awkward days. Now he knew that an awkward day did not erase the progress of all the others.
