Ai Goromo Koi: Red-and-White Koi with Blue Scale Edging

Ai Goromo are non-metallic koi with a Kohaku-like red-and-white pattern and blue or indigo edging within the red scale areas. The overlay gives the red a netted appearance while the white background remains comparatively clear. The shaded red plates are the useful identifying detail, not simply the presence of three apparent colors.

How to Identify Ai Goromo

  • Red pattern areas on a white ground.
  • Blue or indigo scale edging concentrated within the red areas.
  • A non-metallic finish rather than a continuous reflective skin sheen.

Compare Similar Varieties

Compare Kohaku if the red is unshaded. Compare Goshiki when the netted effect is prominent across the background instead. Budo Goromo has a darker grape-like impression. Inspect individual scales in a clear photograph; a distant pond view can make blue edging look like a single dark patch.

Choosing and Observing Ai Goromo

Look for a red pattern you like and an overlay that remains readable rather than obscuring every detail. The head marking need not be a separate round Maruten spot on every Ai Goromo. Young overlay can develop, but its exact mature appearance cannot be guaranteed. Ask for photographs over time and avoid buying solely on an attractive prediction.
