Koi Pond Water Change Calculator

Calculate a koi pond water change
Enter your pond volume and desired water-change percentage to see exactly how much water to drain and replace. You can also model repeated partial water changes and see how much of the original water remains.
1. Pond volume
Don't know it? Calculate pond volume first.
2. Water-change plan
Enter the percentage you have already decided to replace. The calculator does not prescribe a maintenance or treatment percentage.
Use more than one to see the cumulative effect of repeated partial changes.
Drain and replace per water change
One partial water change replaces the selected percentage of pond water.
Repeated partial water changes overlap. Two 20% changes do not replace 40% of the original water: after the first change, some of the second 20% removed is already replacement water.
Water change formula
One change
Pond volume × change percentage
Original water remaining
(1 − change fraction)number of changes
Original water replaced
1 − original fraction remaining
Why repeated partial changes are not simply added together
Suppose you change 20% of the water twice. The first change removes 20% of the original pond water, leaving 80%. The second 20% change removes 20% of that remaining mixture, so 64% of the original water remains. That means the two changes have replaced 36% of the original water, not 40%.
Calculator note
This tool calculates water volume only. It does not determine how large or frequent a water change should be for a particular pond condition, treatment, or emergency. Match replacement water temperature when practical, protect koi from chlorine or chloramine in treated source water, and base maintenance decisions on your pond's actual water quality.
