Koi Resources: Associations, History and Fish Health

Good koi references answer different questions. Associations help with varieties and the hobby’s traditions; extension publications explain water quality and fish management. Use the resources below alongside your pond records and local expert advice.

Japanese Koi Associations

Zen Nippon Airinkai (ZNA) provides an entry point to the international koi hobby. Its variety profiles are useful when comparing color, pattern, scales and sheen. A variety name describes appearance; it does not establish an individual fish’s health or value.

History and Background

Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association history describes the development of nishikigoi in Niigata and the 1914 exhibition. Our history article offers a companion introduction.

Water Quality and Fish Management

UF/IFAS dissolved oxygen guidance explains oxygen supply and daily changes. Its ammonia guidance explains why temperature and pH matter when interpreting a test. These aquaculture references cover several systems; production-pond treatment recipes should not be applied automatically to a backyard koi pond.

Find the Right Local Help

For a club, ask which meetings, pond visits and practical activities are currently available. For a dealer, ask about fish origins, health history and quarantine arrangements. For an ill fish, seek an aquatic veterinarian or qualified fish-health professional rather than choosing treatment from a photograph alone.
